Health and Safety Policy — House Clearance Chalfont Saint Giles
This Health and Safety Policy sets out the commitments and procedures adopted by House Clearance Chalfont Saint Giles for safe, compliant and responsible house clearance and rubbish removal across our service area. The document is a formal statement of our approach to minimizing risk to staff, clients, contractors and the public when carrying out house clearance, rubbish collection and waste disposal tasks. It complements applicable legislation and industry best practice while remaining focused on practical on-site controls and safe systems of work.
Our objectives are to prevent accidents, control hazards and ensure all team members understand their responsibilities. The policy applies to all operations within our rubbish company service area, including domestic clearances, commercial tidy-outs and disposal operations. Everyone who carries out clearance work on behalf of the business must adhere to this policy and the associated safe working procedures.

Scope and responsibilities
Management retains overall responsibility for health, safety and welfare. Day-to-day responsibility for implementing this policy is delegated to appointed supervisors and site teams. Employees and subcontractors must:- Follow safe systems of work and risk assessments.
- Report hazards or incidents promptly.
- Use provided personal protective equipment (PPE).
Risk assessment and control measures
Risk assessments are carried out for each job to identify site-specific hazards such as manual handling risks, trip and fall hazards, hazardous substances and traffic interfaces. Controls are implemented using a hierarchy of measures: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and PPE. Examples include mechanical aids for heavy lifts, cordoning off unstable structures and safe segregation of recyclable and hazardous materials in accordance with waste transfer rules.
Training and competence are essential. All operatives receive induction covering manual handling, safe lifting techniques, use of tools and equipment, and safe handling of unknown waste types. We maintain records of training and ensure staff renewing competency where necessary. Contractors working in our waste removal service area must demonstrate equivalent training and insurance before starting work.
Health surveillance and wellbeing are promoted. Where staff are exposed to dust, asbestos risk or repeating manual tasks, appropriate monitoring, medical checks and adjustments to duties will be arranged. Employees are encouraged to report any health concerns confidentially so that adjustments can be made to protect their wellbeing.
Accident reporting and investigation: all incidents, near misses and injuries must be reported immediately. A formal investigation will identify root causes and corrective actions. Records are kept in accordance with legal requirements and used to update risk assessments and safe systems of work. Our approach to incident management supports continuous improvement in safety performance across the rubbish clearance service area.
Equipment, vehicles and maintenance: Vehicles and plant are subject to regular inspections and maintenance schedules. Drivers and operators hold valid licences and training for the equipment they use. Faulty equipment is taken out of service until repaired. Loading and securing of waste for transport follow safe loading procedures to prevent spillage or load shift during transit within the service area.
Waste classification and handling: waste is assessed on-site and segregated where necessary into general waste, recyclable materials and controlled wastes (e.g. batteries, solvents, asbestos-containing items). When controlled waste is identified, we follow statutory procedures for documentation and disposal. Our teams are trained to recognise hazardous items and to safely isolate them from general loads to protect staff and the environment.
Emergency procedures and site security: clear emergency arrangements are in place for fire, spillage or severe injury. Staff are briefed on emergency contacts, assembly points and first-aid provision before commencing work. Sites are kept secure and public access is managed to prevent unauthorised entry, reducing the risk to passersby and clients during active clearances.
Communication and client responsibilities: we provide clear pre-job information describing any known risks and expected client actions, such as removal of sensitive documents or identification of high-risk materials. Where client cooperation is required, we request confirmation in writing of agreed responsibilities prior to commencement to ensure safety for all parties in the rubbish clearance service area.
Monitoring and review: this policy is reviewed at least annually or following significant incidents, changes to legislation or operational practice. Performance is monitored through internal audits, toolbox talks and spot checks on sites in the service area. Records of inspections, training, incidents and maintenance are retained to demonstrate compliance and to inform ongoing improvements.
Commitment: We are committed to continuous improvement in health and safety across all house clearance and waste management operations. This policy provides the framework for safe work in our rubbish clearance and waste removal service area and ensures that our teams are equipped to deliver services responsibly and safely.
